GIS provides text and illustrations on a wide variety of geoscience topics of broad interest to the general public, including geologic and hydrologic hazards, glaciers, volcanoes, global environmental change, planets, moons, asteroids, and comets of the Solar System, etc. Topics can also be focused on geographic areas of unique geological and/or biological interest, such as Iceland, Hawai'i, Galápagos Islands, Cape Cod, that are well known to the GIS staff.

Articles on geoscience and geographic-area specific topics are written for popular magazines, children's magazines, educational media, etc. A few examples of published articles and maps of general interest are:

National Geographic Society, 2000, Coral world map and virtual reefscape poster: Washington, D.C.; cartography by Nietschmann, B.Q., Norris, T.B., Rose, R.S., and Roswell, J.M., GeoMap, Department of Geography, University of California at Berkeley; Williams, R.S., Steele, J., de Blij, H.J., and Nietschmann, B.Q., editors; National Geographic Society, Committee for Research and Exploration, double-sided printing.
